Energy Consumption of the Brain
Here's How to Power Your Control Center

The brain is the control center of our body. Not only does conscious thought take place here, but all bodily functions are also controlled here. Breathing, the heartbeat, the production of hormones and neurotransmitters, muscle function, the perception of sensory stimuli—all of this and much more takes place in the brain. Here, countless signals are transmitted and processed every second of our lives.

So it’s no wonder that the brain needs a great deal of energy. This is especially true when we also want to perform at our mental best. That’s why many people wonder what their brain actually needs and how they can support it. Let’s take a closer look at just how much energy the brain and nervous system actually consume!

Key Facts at a Glance: Energy Consumption of the Brain

  • High Energy Demand: The brain accounts for only 2% of body weight, but consumes about 20% of the body’s total energy and oxygen.
  • Glucose as the Main Fuel: The brain’s primary source of energy is glucose; in an emergency, it can also use ketone bodies.
  • Constant Energy Consumption: The brain works nonstop. Even during sleep or while performing everyday bodily functions, energy consumption remains high.
  • Micronutrients as the key: Vitamins and minerals such as magnesium and calcium act as important cofactors in energy metabolism and signal transduction.

How much energy does the brain use?

Our brain isn’t particularly large or heavy: it accounts for just 2% of our body mass. Despite its light weight, however, it consumes a great deal of energy. About one-fifth (or 20%) of our total energy is used by the brain. The situation is similar when it comes to oxygen consumption: 20% of the body’s oxygen supply goes to the brain to enable all of its vital functions. Why does the brain need so much energy?

This high energy consumption is caused by constant signal processing. While most other organs and bodily structures have only a few tasks and can rest in between, the brain is constantly active. For it to function properly, it needs a solid foundation of nutrients.

What’s interesting is this: The brain’s energy consumption remains surprisingly constant. Whether we’re thinking intensely, learning a difficult dance routine, or simply sleeping, the brain is always active. Complex mental tasks increase energy consumption by only a few percentage points at most. So the brain uses most of its energy for the everyday functions of controlling our body and mind. How does the brain get its energy?

The brain’s primary source of energy is glucose, a form of carbohydrate. If there is not enough glucose available, the brain can also meet its energy needs using substances called ketone bodies. These substances are produced in the liver from fatty acids.

In addition to these pure energy sources, however, the brain also needs building materials to form neural connections and repair minor damage. Fats play an important role here. The human brain itself consists largely of fats. Fatty acids are therefore important components of cell membranes. Omega-3 fatty acids are particularly often mentioned in this context.

In addition, the brain needs oxygen and water, as well as amino acids, which serve as building blocks for proteins and neurotransmitters. Vitamins and minerals are also important. Although they do not provide direct energy, they play a role in numerous metabolic processes.

Examples include magnesium, calcium, iron, zinc, and various B vitamins. They often act as cofactors for enzymes that facilitate energy metabolism.

In other words, glucose is the fuel for many processes in the brain. In order for this fuel to be utilized and for the numerous biochemical processes to function properly, the body also needs vitamins and minerals as components of normal metabolism.

How does a balanced diet support the body?

The body in general, and the brain in particular, depend on having all the necessary building blocks, nutrients, and energy sources available. A balanced and varied diet is the foundation for this.

The better your body is supplied with all the necessary macronutrients and micronutrients, the more confident you can be that your brain also has everything it needs and that it can make the most of the energy available to it.

How can you support nutrient intake?

Would you like to do even more? Then high-quality dietary supplements might be a good solution for you. Our SILICIUM PLUS capsules are especially popular. They contain magnesium and calcium, among other ingredients.

Among other things, magnesium contributes to normal energy metabolism, normal nervous system function, and normal psychological function. Calcium plays a role in cell division and differentiation and also contributes to normal signal transmission between nerve cells.

For anyone who wants even more, SILICIUM PRIME is the perfect choice: This bundle includes SILICIUM PLUS capsules as well as drops containing vitamin D3 and vitamin K2. Give your body an extra dose of these essential micronutrients!
