Summertime is berry time! In addition to strawberries and raspberries, special health treasures are now ripening – redcurrants. Did you know that currants contain lots of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants and that you can not only eat them, but also use them as skin care ingredients? We’ll show you how to do this and what benefits currants have for your skin and body.
Why are currants so healthy?
Currants have a whole range of health benefits that you can take advantage of:
-
High vitamin C content: Currants are particularly rich in vitamin C. This vitamin contributes to the normal functioning of the immune system (body’s defenses). Vitamin C is also an antioxidant that can protect cells from oxidative stress. This is particularly important for reducing premature skin ageing.
-
other antioxidants: In addition to vitamin C, currants contain other antioxidants such as flavonoids, polyphenols and anthocyanins.
-
Minerals: The small black or red berries contain important minerals such as iron, magnesium and potassium. These support many different bodily functions and also benefit the skin.
The differences between white, red and black currants
There are different types of currants. Although all currants are healthy, there are still differences:
-
Blackcurrants have the highest vitamin C content and are particularly rich in antioxidants. Their taste is quite sour and rather tart, sometimes they also have a slightly earthy and spicy flavor.
-
Redcurrants are also rich in vitamin C and antioxidants. They taste sour, but also have a sweet, refreshing note. Blackcurrants lack the tart taste of their red relatives, which is why they are more popular in terms of taste.
-
White currants taste the mildest and sweetest, but contain fewer antioxidants than black or red currants. Nevertheless, they are healthy and a real addition to your diet.
DIY recipes: How to use redcurrants for your skin
By eating plenty of redcurrants during the harvest season, you also support your skin from the inside with valuable nutrients. However, you can also use the vitamin-rich berries externally. These three DIY recipes with redcurrants provide intensive care for your skin.
