Silicon is the second most common element in the earth’s crust after oxygen. Between 20 and 30 percent of the total mass consists of silicon. It is found in stones, sand and soil, in plants and also in many foods. However, its bioavailability is crucial. The majority of naturally occurring silicon can hardly be absorbed by the body. Modern technologies can help here.
What is bioavailability?
The term bioavailability indicates how well the body can utilize a certain substance. Not everything that we absorb with food, through the air or by other means can be directly utilized by the body. Some substances are simply excreted unused.
When a substance is broken down in the body, this is known as the first-pass effect. The more pronounced this is, the less of the actual substance remains. If, on the other hand, the body can use a substance completely, this is called “absolute bioavailability”.
How good is the bioavailability of silicon?
The bioavailability of silicon depends primarily on the form in which it is bound. In nature, the mineral mainly occurs in the form of coarse silicon dioxide. However, this substance cannot be processed effectively because the silicon in this form is far too coarse-grained.
Only certain silicon compounds are accessible. In general, smaller silicon molecules or monomeric forms can be better utilized than large chains or polymers. In many cases, the substance is simply broken down or excreted again. As a rule, the body can absorb less than 10 percent of silicon, so over 90 percent is lost. But this does not have to be the case.
SAM-Silicon: How to make silicon bioavailable
To increase the bioavailability of the silicon, we use a special manufacturing process called SAM (surface activated minerals). In this process, the silicon molecules (and all other ingredients in our products) are broken up at a very specific angle. The resulting structure ensures that the body can absorb the particles better.
But this is only the first step: we then “coat” the silicon with MCT oil. This makes the mineral, which is actually water-soluble, fat-soluble or liposomal. This ensures even better bioavailability. The resulting SAM silicon has a bioavailability combined with a retarding effect that is approximately eight times higher than that of conventional silicon. Of course, we have had this confirmed by an independent laboratory in a corresponding in vitro study. And it has yet another advantage:
Bioavailable silicon with a long-term effect
SAM silicon is not only better absorbed by the body, but also has the aforementioned retarding effect: after taking the silicon preparation, the body forms a kind of depot. Over the next 24 hours, until the next intake, it can then draw on this depot.
Our bioavailable silicon therefore has two decisive advantages: It can be better absorbed and it is available for a longer period of time.
